The remains of a palace from the Minoan civilization on the east coast of Crete. Also known as Káto Zákro. Built around 1700 BC, at the beginning of the New Palace period, it was destroyed by fire around 1450 BC. It is smaller in size than other palaces on Crete, but is similarly a collection of many rooms surrounding a central courtyard, with the main part divided into an east wing and a west wing. Facing the courtyard, the west wing was occupied by a large room called the Ceremonial Hall and a Feasting Hall, the floor of which was inlaid with red clay. Behind these are smaller rooms such as a chapel and a sacred treasury. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
