Dutch architectural theorist and painter (1527-1604). Born in Leeuwarden. Published many works, mainly elaborate copperplate illustrations, on perspective drawing and classical architectural techniques. He had a major influence on Renaissance architecture in the Netherlands, as well as in Northern Europe, Britain, and Eastern Europe. He was particularly popular for his eccentric Mannerist decorative details, which popularized the techniques of his predecessor, C. Floris. As a painter, he is said to have contributed to the establishment of landscape paintings with architecture as their theme, but he produced few works. [Fukuda Harunobu]

オランダの建築理論家，画家。レーワルデン生れ。透視図法や古典建築技法に関する，精巧な銅版挿図を主とした多くの著作を刊行。オランダを中心に，北欧，イギリス，東欧などのルネサンス建築に大きな影響を与えた。とくに先輩のC.フローリスの手法を通俗化した，奇矯なマニエリスム的な装飾細部がもてはやされた。画家としては，建築を主題とする風景画の確立に貢献したとされるが，作品は少ない。【福田晴虔】
