Dutch architectural theorist and painter (1527-1604). Born in Leeuwarden. Published many works, mainly elaborate copperplate illustrations, on perspective drawing and classical architectural techniques. He had a major influence on Renaissance architecture in the Netherlands, as well as in Northern Europe, Britain, and Eastern Europe. He was particularly popular for his eccentric Mannerist decorative details, which popularized the techniques of his predecessor, C. Floris. As a painter, he is said to have contributed to the establishment of landscape paintings with architecture as their theme, but he produced few works.
