Kiyomoto Saibei

Japanese: 清元斎兵衛 - きよもとさいべえ

The stage name of a shamisen player in Kiyomoto-bushi. Four generations passed from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. The first (years of birth and death unknown) was active during the Bunka to Tenpo period (1804-1844). His original name was Tobaya Mankichi. He played the shamisen role for the first Kiyomoto Enjudayu, and changed his surname from Shimizu to Kiyosawa when Kiyomoto-bushi was established. He later changed his name to Kiyomoto Saibei. In his later years he called himself Saiju. He composed most of the early Kiyomoto pieces. His main works include Yasuna and Kasane. The second (years of birth and death unknown) was a pupil of the first. He took the name around 1837. He composed pieces such as Kanda Matsuri.

清元節の三味線方の芸名。幕末から明治期まで４世続いた。初世（生没年未詳）は文化―天保期（1804年―1844年）に活躍。初名鳥羽屋万吉。初世清元延寿太夫の立三味線を務め，清元節の樹立時に清水から清沢に改姓。のち清元斎兵衛と改める。晩年には斎寿と称した。清元初期の作品のほとんどを作曲。主作品は《保名(やすな)》《累(かさね)》など。２世（生没年未詳）は初世の門人。1837年ごろ襲名。《神田祭》などを作曲。
