The American Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was founded in 1934 when a stockbroker and a doctor who had once been chronic alcoholics called for people to "help each other and serve those in need, so that we can break free from alcohol." The history of the Temperance Society in Japan is said to have begun with the Yokohama Temperance Society in 1875, but the organization was destroyed during World War II. In 1957, the Tokyo Temperance Society was established, modeled on the American AA, and organizations were established in various regions, leading to the formation of the All Japan Temperance Federation in 1963. It holds a national convention once a year. Today, Temperance Society can be found anywhere in the world where there are chronic alcoholics, and they conduct their activities in a way that is appropriate to the culture of each country.
