A historian in the mid-Edo period. His name was Gen, commonly known as Genpachi and Senpo, and he also had the pen names Hakuryū and Sessai. His father was Nagasawa Ryosetsu, a scholar from the Yodo Domain in Yamashiro Province. At the age of 14, he went to Kyoto to study under Kuwana Shōun of the Kimon school. In 1693 (Genroku 6, or according to some sources Genroku 5), at the age of 23, he entered the service of the Mito Domain, and participated in the compilation of the Dai Nihonshi (Great History of Japan) as an editor at the Shokōkan. He was highly trusted by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the former lord of Mito, and was promoted to president of the Shokōkan at the young age of 27. He died at the age of 36 and was buried at Ryukōji Temple in Komagome, Edo. His books include "Hoken Daiki" and "Wa-shi Kohen", and his collection of essays includes "Heisoshu".
