A historian in the mid-Edo period. His name was Gen, commonly known as Genpachi and Senpo, and he also had the pen names Hakuryū and Sessai. His father was Nagasawa Ryosetsu, a scholar from the Yodo Domain in Yamashiro Province. At the age of 14, he went to Kyoto to study under Kuwana Shōun of the Kimon school. In 1693 (Genroku 6, or according to some sources Genroku 5), at the age of 23, he entered the service of the Mito Domain, and participated in the compilation of the Dai Nihonshi (Great History of Japan) as an editor at the Shokōkan. He was highly trusted by Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the former lord of Mito, and was promoted to president of the Shokōkan at the young age of 27. He died at the age of 36 and was buried at Ryukōji Temple in Komagome, Edo. His books include "Hoken Daiki" and "Wa-shi Kohen", and his collection of essays includes "Heisoshu".

江戸中期の歴史家。名は愿(げん)、通称源八、潜鋒のほか伯立、拙斎(せっさい)などの号がある。父は山城国(やましろのくに)淀(よど)藩の学者長沢良節。14歳のとき京都に出て崎門(きもん)学派の桑名松雲(しょううん)に学んだ。1693年（元禄6。一説に元禄5）23歳で水戸(みと)藩に仕え、彰考館(しょうこうかん)編修として『大日本史』の編纂(へんさん)に従った。水戸前藩主徳川光圀(みつくに)の信頼厚く抜擢(ばってき)され、27歳の若さで彰考館総裁となった。36歳で没し、江戸駒込(こまごめ)の竜光寺に葬られた。著書に『保建大記』『倭(わ)史後編』、文集に『弊帚(へいそう)集』などがある。
