A heretical Christian sect that spread mainly in southern France and northern Italy in the Middle Ages. Depending on the region, it was also called the "Poor of Lyon" or the "Poor of Lombardy." It originated when Peter Waldo, a wealthy Lyon merchant, converted to Christianity, abandoned his possessions, and preached in the streets. By 1170, a small sect had been formed around him. In 1179, it applied for recognition from the Vatican, but was declared a heretic in 1284. In 1207, it split, and the moderates converted to Christianity and formed the "Poor Catholics," which opposed the powerful heretical Cathars of the time.
