A city on the Potwal Plateau in the northwestern tip of Punjab province in northern Pakistan. Population 928,000 (1981). Bounded on the east and west by the Punjab plains and the Khyber Pass, and a junction of roads to the northern mountainous region, it occupies a strategic and transport hub. A vast cantonment stretches out on the southern outskirts of the old city, and during the British era it was the largest military garrison in British India in preparation for Russia's southward expansion policy. Pakistan Army Headquarters is still located here. The city's history dates back to before the 14th century, but it developed only after it became a British colony in 1849.
