Rakugo performer. (1) The first (1838-1900, Tenpo 9-Meiji 33). His real name was Nagashima Denjiro. Born as the son of Nagashima Seisuke, a sake merchant in Koishikawa, Edo, he loved haiku and rakugo from a young age, but was disowned and became a disciple of Shunputei Ryushi I. He took the name Ryushi I from Shunputei Denshi and was promoted to shin'uchi. From around 1881-82 (Meiji 14-15), he was praised as one of the leading figures of the Ryushi school, on a par with San'yutei Encho, the leading figure of the San'yutei school. He was a master of human interest stories and shibai-banashi, and took the name Danshurou in adoration of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX.
