Hitotsubashi University

Japanese: 一橋大学 - ひとつばしだいがく
Hitotsubashi University

A national university corporation, it dates back to Mori Arinori's privately established Commercial Law Training School in 1875 (Meiji 8). In 1884, it came under the direct control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce and was renamed Tokyo Commercial School. The following year, in 1885, it came under the direct control of the Ministry of Education, merged with Tokyo School of Foreign Languages and moved to Kanda Hitotsubashi, from which the current university name comes. It was later renamed Tokyo Higher Commercial School in 1902 (Meiji 35), and became Tokyo University of Commerce in 1920 (Taisho 9). In addition to its undergraduate programs, the university also had a preparatory school, a commercial studies department, and a commercial teacher training institute, and developed into Japan's first social science university. Throughout the Meiji and Taisho periods, it produced many talented people who would play a key role in the development of Japan's economy and society. Between 1927 (Showa 2) and 1930, it moved from Hitotsubashi to its current location.

In 1949, the former Tokyo University of Commerce was reorganized as Hitotsubashi University, becoming a new national university with the faculties of commerce, economics, and law and sociology. In 1951, the faculties of law and sociology were separated and reorganized into two faculties, resulting in a four-faculty system. The education system based on the seminar system has been a tradition since before the Second World War, and has built a unique academic style that is both practical and academic. The graduate school has doctoral programs in all fields of law, sociology, economics, and commerce, and the Graduate School of Language and Society was established in 1996 and the Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy in 1998. In addition, the Department of International and Public Policy Education and the Department of International and Public Policy Research were established in 2005. The attached research institute is the Economic Research Institute (predecessor to the East Asian Economic Research Institute, founded in 1940), and the attached education and research facilities include the Innovation Research Center and the Center for Social Science Classics, known for its rich collection of domestic and international social science classics. In April 2004, following the enforcement of the National University Corporation Law, the university became a national university corporation. Its headquarters are located at 2-1 Naka, Kunitachi City, Tokyo.
