[Died] November 28, 1859. Tarrytown, New York. American author. Known as the founder of the short story. He initially wanted to be a lawyer, but showed an interest in literature. This "first great American humor" was interrupted in 1809 by the sudden death of his wife. In 1815, he went to England on business, and although the business failed, he became the first American author to gain international fame with The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. (1819-20), which contained many masterpieces. He then traveled around Europe in search of new subjects, and published The Alhambra (32), among others. He returned to the United States in 1832, and served as minister in Madrid from 1842 to 1846. In his later years he became interested in biographies and wrote works such as George Washington (55-59).
