A former German state (land) located on both banks of the upper reaches of the Weser River. The "Lippe nobility" expanded their territory between the source of the Lippe River, a tributary of the Rhine, and the Weser River since the 12th century, and became a countship in the 16th century. In the 17th century, it split into three families (one of which was abolished in the 18th century), of which Lippe-Detmold became a principality in 1789 and maintained its independence as a state until 1946. In 1918, it became a republic, and in 1947, it was incorporated into the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, becoming the Lippe district of Detmold prefecture (population 327,000 (1980)).
