However, as the Italian film industry faced a serious crisis, he closed Dino Città and moved to the United States in 1973, where he began working as an independent filmmaker on an equal footing with the major companies. He believed that "film is about the story, not the stars," and produced films such as The Yakuza (1973) and The Goodbye Dog (1974), directed by Michael Winner (1936- ), starring Charles Bronson, Serpico (1973) and directed by Sidney Lumet (1924- ), starring Al Pacino, Condor (1975) and directed by Sydney Pollack (1934- ), starring Robert Redford, and King Kong (1976), directed by John Guillermin, a remake of the 1933 classic monster movie, establishing his firm position as an independent filmmaker in the United States. Although "King Kong" was a box office failure, the distribution rights were already sold in advance before the film's release, and the filmmaker recouped most of its production costs, earning him legendary praise in the industry for his "skill."
