A former town in Kimotsuki District, southeastern Kagoshima Prefecture. The main settlement is at the southern end of the Kimotsuki Plain in the center of the Osumi Peninsula, with the southern part being plateaus and mountains. The town produces rice and sweet potatoes, and has recently been active in fruit farming and livestock farming. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Kihoku Town, Soo District, Kushira Town, Kimotsuki District, and Kanoya City. 59.15 km2 . 7,591 people (2003). 鹿児島県南東部,肝属(きもつき)郡の旧町。大隅半島中央の肝属平野南端に主集落があり,南部は台地と山地。米,サツマイモを産し,最近は果樹と畜産も活発。2006年1月曾於郡輝北町,肝属郡串良町と鹿屋市へ編入。59.15km2。7591人(2003)。
