...Silent films such as Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925) and Pudovkin's The Mother (1926), which mark the history of silent films, were made, followed by Eisenstein's October (1928), a film commemorating the 10th anniversary of the revolution, and Pudovkin's Asian Storm (1928).Furthermore, such films as Eisenstein's The Line (Old and New) (1929), which promoted socialist construction, and The Good Earth (1930), a film about agricultural collectivization by Ukrainian director A.P. Dovzhenko (1894-1956), were made. In 1928, while not a single talkie had yet been made in the Soviet Union, three directors, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, and Aleksandrov GV Aleksandrov (1903-83), jointly published the "Manifesto on Talkies," in which they proclaimed that the montage of images and sound and their contrapuntal treatment were the new path of talkie art. The first talkie was "Guide to Life" (1931), directed by NVEkk Ekk (1902-59), which depicted the rescue and edification of a homeless child.

From Talkie Movies

... The theoretical foundations of talkies were laid in the Soviet Union, a country that had not yet produced talkies. In 1928, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, and Grigory Alexandrov (1903-83) jointly published the "Manifesto on Talkies," which could be called "theory of talkie montage." The first full-length Soviet talkie, "Advice on Life" (1931), directed by Nikolai Ek (1902-59), embodied this theory. In France, Rene Clair pioneered new talkie expression with "Under the Roofs of Paris" (1931), in America, Rouben Mamoulian used sound in a cinematic way with "City" (1931), and in Germany, GW Papst opened the way for a new musical film with "The Threepenny Opera" (1931). ...
