Early recitatives are roughly the same as monody, but with the Venetian school, a musical distinction was made between the dramatic development and dialogue and the emotional expression. Arioso, a short melodic figure, was inserted at the height of emotion, and developed into an aria, while the dramatic development and dialogue became independent as recitative. Due to its role, it emphasizes the rhythm and intonation of the words, and is recited formally and freely, supported by the harmonic foundation of the basso continuo. …
