…The four lay priests were followers of Zhang Shen, a descendant of Fuke, who accompanied Mubon (Shinjuku) Kakushin (Hotō Kokushi) when he returned to Japan after visiting Song China in 1249. They built Fuke-an hermitage within the grounds of Kokoku-ji Temple in Yura, Kii, and made it their residence. Mubon Kakushin's Dharma grandson Kinzen (Kinsen) appeared and was converted by Hojo Tsunetoki, who founded Ichigatsu-ji Temple in Kogane, Shimousa, and established a training center for the sect. In the Middle Ages, they were called Komo-so and Boro, and the number of followers of the Fuke sect seems to have gradually increased, but it was not until the early modern period that they officially called themselves Fuke and developed as a sect. …
