A mammalian animal of the order Rodentia and family Sciuridae. It lives in the prairies of North America and is named after the sound it makes, which sounds like a dog. It is found from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Its body length is 30 cm, its tail 10 cm. It looks similar to the closely related ground squirrel, but it is slightly larger, has a sturdy body, and its limbs and tail are short. Its body color is yellowish gray to reddish brown on the back and white on the ventral side. They dig tunnel networks in the ground covering an area of several dozen square kilometers, and live in large groups of tens of thousands of individuals, forming towns. Within the towns, small groups (coteries) of 10 to 10 adults and young animals each occupy a certain territory and live next to each other. At the entrance to their burrows, they build cone-shaped mounds out of excavated soil, and the prairie dogs often sit on these and immediately jump into their burrows if they sense danger. They are diurnal and feed on herbaceous plants. After a gestation period of about 30 days, females give birth to 4-6 pups in March or April. There are several closely related species, including the white-tailed prairie dog C. gunnisoni . In Japan, the import of prairie dogs into the country has been prohibited since March 1, 2003, in order to prevent the introduction of plague into the country.
