Men's Assembly Hall - danshi shuukaijo

A communal house for men of an age group or a men's association. They exist all over the world, although their uses and functions vary. Youthhouses, where unmarried young men live together, are often found in East Africa and Northeast India, where they undergo social and military training to become full-fledged adults. In these youthhouses, men are sometimes allowed to interact with the opposite sex under certain rules, which has been interpreted in various ways, such as a place for sex education or a place to find a suitable spouse. Some youthhouses are sleeping quarters, where men spend the day with their individual families and come to sleep only at night.

Men's houses, which are found in many parts of Melanesia, including the New Guinea highlands, are not only places where unmarried young men live together, but married men often come to stay there at night as well. Women are considered unclean, so domestic interactions with women are kept to a minimum. Men's meeting places, which married men also attend, are often the center of political and religious activities, and are where meetings of elders are held, initiations, festivals, and, in the case of associations, ceremonies such as mysticism are held. Some of these places are like community houses that are not used for sleeping quarters by members, but serve as accommodations for visitors when they arrive.

Among meeting halls, many are large and elaborately constructed, with an architectural style different from that of ordinary houses, and are often decorated with elaborate carvings and murals. These meeting halls are symbols of the community, and as ceremonial spaces they may house special ritual implements. However, on the other hand, ordinary houses may be used as meeting halls for convenience. Women are generally excluded from men's meeting halls, but in societies where women form associations, they may hold their meetings in the same hall as men. There are also cases where meeting halls are used as a place for sexual relations between unmarried men and women, within certain norms.
