Fasting - Danjiki

Fasting means abstaining from all or a specific type of food and drink for a certain period of time, and is a religious act common to many religions around the world. In this sense, it includes what are called "abstinences" and temporary food abstinences found in many primitive religions, but excludes permanent food abstinences found in Totemism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, etc.

Fasting occurs at various times, and the motives are by no means uniform. Many explanations have been offered by scholars, but none have become the definitive explanation. If we were to classify it tentatively, firstly, in times of crisis that occur in the cycle of human life, such as pregnancy, childbirth, menarche, coming of age, and death, the person concerned, their spouse, or their family members often perform certain rituals, including fasting. Fasting is also observed in times of communal crisis, such as war or drought, as is seen in Judaism and Islam.

Secondly, fasting is often performed to enhance the effectiveness of magical acts or prayers or to demonstrate one's sincerity. For example, in Islam, it is said that prayers made during fasting will always be answered.

Third, fasting is often performed as a purification or ablution in preparation for religious rites such as festivals, initiations, or communions, as well as before Hindu or Shinto festivals, the Catholic Mass, baptism, and other liturgies.

Fourthly, fasting is performed as an act of atonement and repentance. In Judaism, when sacrifices could no longer be offered in the temple due to the Babylonian captivity, prayer and fasting came to replace them as a form of atonement for sins. Among these, the fasting on Yom Kippur is well known. In Islam, the month of Ramadan is designated as the fasting month, but fasting is also recommended for atonement as well as charity.

Fifth, fasting is practiced as a form of asceticism, in which abstinence is practiced to control human desires and aid in mental concentration in order to reach a higher religious state. This is commonly seen in Eastern religions, such as Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, Chinese Taoism, and Japanese Shugendo.

Sixth, while fasting for medical reasons is said to have been practiced since ancient times, in today's secular society fasting is also practiced as a means of protest or to enforce political and ethical demands, as seen in hunger strikes.

一定期間いっさいの、あるいは特定の種類の飲食物を断つことを意味し、世界の諸宗教に広くみられる宗教行為である。この意味では、「断ち物」といわれるものや、未開宗教に多くみられる一時的食物禁忌も断食のなかに含まれてしまうが、トーテミズム、ユダヤ教、イスラム教、ヒンドゥー教などにみられる恒常的な食物禁忌は除外される。

　断食が行われる時期はさまざまであり、またその動機もけっして一様ではない。諸学者によってこれまで多くの説明がなされてきたが、いずれも定説とはなっていない。いまかりにこれを分類してみると、第一に、妊娠、出産、初経（初潮）、成年式、死など人間の一生のサイクルとして現れる危機的状況に際して、当事者ないしは配偶者や家族の者が、断食をはじめとする一定の儀礼を行う場合が多い。また、戦争や干魃(かんばつ)などの共同体的危機に際しても、断食が行われることは、ユダヤ教やイスラム教にみられるとおりである。

　第二に、呪術(じゅじゅつ)的行為や祈願に際して、その効果を高めたり、自己の誠意を示すためにしばしば断食が行われる。たとえば、イスラム教では、断食中の祈願はかならず聞き入れられるといわれる。

　第三に、断食は、祭り、加入式、聖餐(せいさん)などの宗教儀礼の準備、浄(きよ)めとして、潔斎、物忌みの一部として行われる場合が多い。たとえば、ヒンドゥー教や神道(しんとう)の祭り、カトリックのミサ、洗礼などの諸典礼の前などがそうである。

　第四に、断食は贖罪(しょくざい)、懺悔(ざんげ)の行為として行われる。ユダヤ教では、バビロンの捕囚によって神殿で犠牲(いけにえ)を献(ささ)げることができなくなると、贖罪のために祈りと断食がこれにかわるようになった。なかでも贖罪節の断食がよく知られる。イスラム教では、ラマダーン月が断食月と定められているが、それ以外にも喜捨(きしゃ)とともに贖罪のために断食が勧められている。

　第五に、断食は修行の一形態として行われる。これは、食を断つことによって人間の欲望を制御し、精神の集中を助けることによって、高い宗教的境地に到達しようとして行われるものである。仏教、ジャイナ教、ヒンドゥー教、中国の道教、日本の修験道(しゅげんどう)など、とくに東洋の宗教に広くみられる。

　第六に、医学的理由による断食はすでに古くから行われていたといわれるが、そのほかに今日の世俗社会では、断食はハンガー・ストライキなどにみられ政治的倫理的要求の貫徹や抗議の手段として行われている。
