A French theater and theatre company. The director Copeau commissioned Francis Jourdan to renovate the Athénée Saint-Germain, which was located on the street of the same name in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, and the theatre opened in October 1913 as a base for theatrical innovation. Bringing together Durand, Jouvet, Tessier and others, the company achieved great success by modernizing classics by Molière, Musset, Shakespeare and others, as well as staging contemporary plays. During World War I, the company toured America, but reopened in October 1920 with the basic concrete stage designed by Jouvet. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
