Roman Emperor (reigned 96-98). First of the Five Good Emperors. Born in Narnia (now Narni), Italy, as the son of a legal scholar. He was appointed consul twice, in 71 and 90. When Emperor Domitian, who ruled with terror, was assassinated in September 96, he was supported as the new emperor and approved by the Senate, despite being 66 years old and ill. He protected poor farmers and also took into consideration the distribution of grain and the development of water supply in the city of Rome. However, he lacked the support of the military, and was old and childless, so in September 97 he adopted the brave general Trajan, who was then governor of Upper Germania, and named him his successor, setting a precedent for the imperial succession law during the era of the Five Good Emperors. He died in Rome on January 25 of the following year. [Masatoshi Ichikawa] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
