The name of the region in the southwest of France, formerly the province of Guyenne. It corresponds to most of the current Dordogne department and part of the Lot-et-Garonne department. Its capital is Périgueux. It is a plateau on the southwestern slope of the Massif Central, and its main industries are agriculture and livestock farming. Its specialty is truffles. In the Middle Ages, the area was long disputed between the kings of England and France, but it was returned to France in 1398, and finally became a French territory under Henry IV in 1589.
