1929‐ American conductor, pianist, and composer. Born in Berlin and educated in music there and in Paris, he moved to the United States in 1939. He first worked as a jazz pianist and arranger, and also composed film scores, winning four Academy Awards, including for A Bit of Love (1958). He made his conducting debut in 1963 with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and has since served as principal conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
