Otogi-zoshi. Tales of the heroism of Tawara no Fujita Hidesato. 2 volumes. After the illustrated edition was published around the Kan'ei period (1624-44), it became widely circulated. During the reign of Emperor Suzaku, Tawara no Fujita Hidesato saw a giant snake about 20 meters long lying on a bridge in Seta, Omi Province, causing trouble for passersby of all ranks, but he calmly stepped on its back and helped it cross. While staying at an inn on the Tokaido road on his way down to Shimotsuke, he was visited late at night by a beautiful woman of about 20 who asked him to slay the centipede of Mount Mikami, an enemy of the Dragon Palace. The woman was a transformed version of the giant snake. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
