Wood-eating Oki - Table of Contents
A Shingon Buddhist monk from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Mokujiki was his common name. Oki was his given name . His pen name was Junryo. He was also known as Kozan Shonin. He was originally a samurai who served the Sasaki and Ochi clans, but after the downfall of his master, he became a monk at the age of 37 and ascended to Mount Koya. In 1585 ( Tensho 13 ), he made peace with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, halting his attack on Mount Koya, and he also accepted Hideyoshi's devotees. He was the founder of Kosan-ji and Seigan-ji temples at Mount Koya. After he became a monk, he only ate nuts and fruit, and was therefore known as Mokujiki Shonin. Tenbun 5 - Keicho 13 (1536-1608 )
