The god of happiness in the White Lotus Sect, a branch of Chinese Taoism. The statue depicts two figures standing, both smiling with tufts of hair and wearing green robes, one holding a stick in his right hand and a drum in his left, the other offering a white lotus flower, and both stepping on a treasure. Above the statue depicting the two is an inscription entitled "Harmony brings all good fortune, daily advances of peace coins, calligraphy by Suitei Gaofu, auspicious omens for all things." It is said to be based on a statue by Hanshan and Shide, a high priest from the Tang dynasty. In China, it was worshiped at weddings. In Japan, it is believed to be a god of harmony between men and women, and was popular during the Edo period. *From the humorous book Chushingura Henshikiron (1812), "Praying to the god of harmony so that the husband's heart will not change" Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
