Jun Tahara - Jun Tahara

Pathologist. Born in Oita Prefecture. His real surname was Nakajima. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University in 1901 (Meiji 34), and then studied in Germany at his own expense in 1903, where he studied under Aschoff at the University of Marburg. There he conducted research on cardiac muscle in mammals, discovering special muscle fibers (Tahara nodes or Aschoff-Tahara nodes), which he named the cardiac impulse-conducting muscular system in 1906 and announced. He returned to Japan in the same year and became an associate professor at Fukuoka Medical College (now Kyushu University Faculty of Medicine), becoming a professor in 1908. He retired in 1934 (Showa 9), but during that time he served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Director of the University's Institute of Hot Spring Medical Research. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he was awarded the Imperial Academy Prize for his "Research on the Impulse-Conducting Muscular System in the Mammalian Heart."

病理学者。大分県生まれ。本姓は中島氏。1901年（明治34）東京帝国大学医学部を卒業、その後1903年に私費でドイツに留学し、マールブルク大学のアショフに師事した。ここで哺乳(ほにゅう)動物の心臓筋肉に関して研究を行い、特殊な筋繊維（田原結節またはアショフ‐田原結節）を発見、1906年にこれを心臓刺激伝導筋系統と名づけて発表した。同年帰国し、福岡医科大学（現、九州大学医学部）の助教授となり、1908年教授。1934年（昭和9）定年退官したが、この間に医学部部長、大学附属温泉医療研究所所長を歴任した。1914年（大正3）「哺乳動物の心臓に於(お)ける刺激伝導筋系統の研究」により帝国学士院恩賜賞を受賞。
