...Due to the economic depression and the introduction of protectionist policies by the government, the economic situation in Sicily worsened from the end of the 1880s. In response, workers and peasants formed associations called "workers' fascists" in cities and rural areas to demand improvements in their living and working conditions. The first workers' fascist was formed in Catania in 1891, and by the end of 1892, there were about 25 fascists (a term used to describe the state in which similar people are united to form a group or association) throughout the island.
