A daily newspaper published in Seoul at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. It was founded in July 1904 by British journalists Bethel and Yang Ki-duk. Its editorial staff included Park Un-sik and Shin Chae-ho. It was temporarily suspended in March 1905, but was relaunched in August with a separate English edition. By appointing Bethel as president, the newspaper avoided oppression by the Japanese authorities and took an anti-Japanese and public enlightenment stance. However, the Japanese authorities continued to oppress the newspaper, including the temporary expulsion of Bethel and the arrest of Yang Ki-duk in 1908, following a British consular trial. With the Japan-Korea Annexation in August 1910, the Government-General of Korea bought the newspaper, renamed it Maeil Shinbo, and used it as its organ newspaper.
