…The representatives of this group are the three great Egyptian encyclopedists: Nuwayri, Umari, and Kalkashandī. Nuwayri, who served as the head of the military affairs and the auditing office under the Mamluk sultan Nasir (reigned 1293-94, 1299-1309, 1310-41), spent the last twenty years of his life completing Nihāya al-arab (The Ultimate Aim), a 31-volume work that synthesizes knowledge for scribes. The whole work is divided into five sciences (fann): Geography, Man, Animals, Plants, and History, and each science is divided into smaller chapters. …
