A mid-Edo period ukiyo-e artist. A pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho, he excelled in actor paintings. His real surname was Kiyokawa and his common name was Denjiro, and he is said to have lived in Hasegawa-cho, Edo. He was the oldest of Shunsho's pupils, and like his teacher he used a jar-shaped seal, so he was also known as Ko-tsubo. His period of painting is thought to extend from the An'ei era (1772-81) until around the time of his death, but after suffering a stroke around 1787 or 1788 (Tenmei 7 or 8), he began to paint with his left hand. Most of Shunko's actor paintings are narrow-format, but he also has many masterpieces with a unique impact in large formats.
