Dalmatia (English spelling)

Dalmatia (English spelling)
A province of the Roman Empire, the area inhabited by the Dalmatae tribe corresponds roughly to present-day Yugoslavia. In AD 9 Illyricum was divided into two provinces, and the entire area on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea became known as the Province of Dalmatia. Many immigrants and merchants from Italy, Greece, and the Orient flowed into the coastal cities, centered on Salona (now Solin), and settled in the fertile region, leading to the development of ports and road networks. Inland, agricultural people lived in villages, and some tribes continued to live a nomadic lifestyle, but in the valley regions, large farm estates with their own willas could be found.
