Wang Xiao-Lian

He came to Japan as an ambassador in the 5th year of the Kōnin era (814). In the 6th year he was awarded the rank of Junior Third Rank. In the same year he encountered adverse winds on his way back to Japan and was washed ashore in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), where he died of illness. Kukai mourned his death and composed a poem.
