Dalmatica (English spelling)

Japanese: ダルマティカ(英語表記)dalmatica
Dalmatica (English spelling)
A tunic-style garment introduced from Dalmatia to the Roman Empire around the end of the 2nd century. Worn by early Christian men and women, it is wide in both body and sleeves and long in length. The body and sleeves are generally trimmed with ornamental stripes called "klaus." From around the 4th century, new ideas were developed in the way the dalmatica was cut, and in the 5th century it became the official and priestly garments of the Byzantine Empire, and was also inherited in Western Europe in the early Middle Ages. It is still used as Catholic ceremonial clothing today. [Inoue Yasuo]
