...The stinging hairs contain formic acid and are painful to touch, hence the name "stinging nettle," but the scientific name Urtica also comes from the Latin uro, meaning to burn. The English name for the Urticaceae genus, "nettle," also has the same origin as "needle." The stems are 40 to 80 cm tall.
