A region on the Adriatic coast in the western Balkan Peninsula. A long, narrow coastline stretching from the island of Pag in the northwest to the mouth of Kotor Bay in the southeast, most of which became part of Croatia, which gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The central city is Split. Most of the area is limestone mountainous. Grape and olive cultivation, sheep farming, and fishing are practiced, but in recent years, shipbuilding, aluminum, cement, and other industries have been active. Limestone, marble, bauxite, etc. are produced. It became a Roman province in 33 BC. Croats and Serbs immigrated there in the 7th century. After the 15th century, it was ruled by Venice, Turkey, and Austria, and in 1918 it became part of Yugoslavia. In the Krajina region, centered on Knin in the north, there are many Serbs who oppose Croatia's separation from the new Yugoslavia. → Related article Zadar | Herzegovina Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
