Social Gospel

In the United States after the Civil War, when social problems brought about by capitalism came to the forefront with industrialization and urbanization, this was a Protestant movement that attempted to address social problems from the perspective of the Christian gospel and resolve them.Until then, the gospel had only been concerned with the salvation of individual souls, but this movement came to understand it as a gospel that also brought about social salvation, and addressed social issues primarily affecting workers, such as the abolition of child labor and the improvement of working conditions, becoming a major force in American churches and theology from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. 南北戦争後のアメリカで，工業化と都市化に伴い資本主義のもたらす社会問題が表面化したとき，キリスト教の福音の視点から社会問題と取り組みそれの解決を試みたプロテスタント教派内の運動。それまで個人の魂の救いのみにかかわっていた福音を，社会的な救いをももたらす福音として理解し，児童労働の廃止，労働条件の改善などの，主として労働者の社会問題に取り組み，19世紀末から20世紀初期にいたるアメリカの教会と神学の一大勢力となった。
