Sofa - Sofa (English spelling)

From a functional standpoint, chairs can be divided into three categories: for work, for rest, and something in between for light rest. The most common type for resting is the easy chair, but a large one with a wide opening that can seat two or three people is called a sofa. In the past, it was called a long bench. A typical reception set is a combination of an easy chair and a sofa. Many of them are upholstered to provide good cushioning.

A sofa bed is a type of sofa that can be folded down to become a bed and is used as an extra sleeping platform.

椅子(いす)は機能的な立場から、作業用と休息用、およびその中間の軽休息用の三つに分けることができる。休息用の代表が安楽椅子であるが、その間口が広く、3人もしくは2人が腰掛けられる大形のものをソファという。古くは長椅子とよんでいた。普通にいう応接セットとは、安楽椅子とソファを組み合わせた形式のものである。クッション性をよくするため張りぐるみにしたものが多い。

　ソファの一種にソファベッドがある。これは背もたれを倒すとベッドになるもので、予備の寝台として使われる。
