1499 or 1500-57 Italian mathematician and engineer of the Renaissance. Also spelled Tartalea or Tartalia. Due to a scar on his mouth as a boy, he was given the nickname Tartaglia, which comes from the Italian word for stammering. He received almost no formal education, but acquired mathematical knowledge through his natural diligence. His most original mathematical achievement was the discovery of the solution to the cubic equation in 1535. The dispute with G. Cardano and L. Ferrari over the publication of this discovery became a major topic of discussion. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
