Niccolò Tartaglia

Italian mathematician and engineer of the Renaissance. Also spelled Tartalea or Tartalia. Due to a scar on his mouth as a boy, he was given the nickname Tartaglia, which comes from the Italian word for stammering. He received almost no formal education, but acquired mathematical knowledge through his natural diligence. His most original mathematical achievement was the discovery of the solution to the cubic equation in 1535. The dispute with G. Cardano and L. Ferrari over the publication of this discovery became a major topic of discussion.

ルネサンス期イタリアの数学者，技術者。Tartalea,Tartaliaともつづる。少年期に口に受けた傷によって，どもりを意味するイタリア語に由来するニックネーム，タルターリアを与えられた。正式の教育はほとんど受けなかったが，持ちまえの勤勉さで数学的知識をものにした。数学上の独創的業績としては，1535年の三次方程式の解の発見が第1にあげられる。その公表をめぐるG.カルダーノ，L.フェラリとの論争は大きな話題となった。
