Swiss structural engineer. Born in Bern. After studying at the Zurich Federal Institute of Technology, he opened a structural design office in Zurich in 1902. He was recognized for his unique Mayard bridge method, a reinforced concrete structure using a three-hinge arch, and built the Schwandbach Bridge and Tabanassa Bridge. In 1910, he invented a beam-free floor slab structure, and actually designed a department store in Zurich using this beam-free structure. He moved to Russia in 1912 to work, but returned to the country after the 1917 revolution, re-establishing offices in Geneva, Bern, and Zurich, and working on numerous structures, mainly in Switzerland. One of his later works was the cement hall at the Swiss National Exhibition.
