An old name for movies. A translation of the word "motion picture." The first movies were made in 1895, the Lumiere Cinematograph in France, and the Edison Vitascope in the United States the following year. Both were imported and shown in Japan in 1897, and the name "motion picture" became established from those early days. As they evolved from a spectacle to an art form, the name "movie" became established around 1917.
