The capital of this island in northeastern Kiribati. It produces copra. The inhabitants are Micronesians. It became a British colony in 1892 and was the center of the Gilbert Islands. It was occupied by Japan in 1941 and was the site of fierce battles between the United States and Japan during the Pacific War. It has an area of ​​23 km2 and a population of 40,529 (2010).
