...The Vientiane and Luang Prabang dialects are the standard. In a broad sense, it includes the Lao language spoken in the northernmost part of Laos and in the eastern and northern parts of Thailand, but it is sometimes called Yuan to distinguish between them. The Chiang Mai dialect is a representative example of this.

From the Lao people

...an ethnic group of Thai descent found in northern and northeastern Thailand through Laos. The Lao people of the Ping River basin in northern Thailand speak Yuan (Northern Lao) and use the Yuan script, which is derived from the Hmong script, so they are also called Yuan. On the other hand, the Lao people living in the Mekong River basin in Laos and northeastern Thailand speak Eastern Lao and use the Eastern Lao script, which is derived from the Khmer script.
