He excelled at painting hawks. He is thought to have been a member of the Toki clan, a feudal lord in the Sengoku period of Mino (Gifu Prefecture), but his name does not appear in the Toki clan family tree. In addition, since Toki Yorinari (1501-82), the guardian of the same province, was also skilled at painting hawks, there is a theory that he is the same person as Horabun.
