…He has written 18 books, 291 articles, and 300 reviews, and his research is divided into three areas: Iranian language, comparative grammar, and general linguistics. He succeeded Robert Gauthiot (1876-1916), a comparative linguist and Iranian linguist, in his efforts to decipher and study the Iranian Sogdian language materials brought back from Central Asia by P. Pelliot. He published all of the manuscripts before the Second World War, and also wrote “Avestan Indefinite Law”, “Old Persian Grammar” (co-authored with Meyer), and “Ossetian Studies”. In the field of comparative grammar, his apex works include “The Origin of Noun Formation in Indo-European Languages”, which presented a groundbreaking theory of roots, and “The Vocabulary of Indo-European Institutions” (2 volumes), a compilation of his lectures from his later years. …
