...The situation became extremely complicated due to the anti-Enosis movement by Turkish residents and the international situation in the Middle East at the time, but in February 1959, the Zurich-London Agreement on independence was concluded between the UK, Greece, Turkey and representatives of the residents. After presidential elections (Archbishop Makarios III was elected) and parliamentary elections, Cyprus officially declared its independence as a republic on August 16, 1960. Among the remains of the Late Neolithic period is the oldest agricultural settlement in Cyprus (5800-4900 BC) at Choirokoitía, west of Limassol on the south coast, where stone circular dwellings, stone vessels and weapons have been discovered. The custom of burying the dead under the floor of the dwelling, without creating cemeteries, is particularly characteristic of this period.
