...UPA's graphic techniques have been passed down to the work of Saul Bass, known for the animation of many movie title sequences such as Around the World in Eighty Days and The Great Passage, as well as Robert Breer, Stan Vanderbeek, and Carmen D'Avino, but on the other hand, only the technique of omitting "movement" was easily carried over to the television era of animation, simply to save on soaring labor costs. Short animated films for theaters, full of gags of violence and destruction, which flourished during the war, reached their peak with the works of Tex Avery (such as The Fattest Race, 1947), which could be said to be the ultimate in insanity, and then declined with Fritz Vlieleng's pantomime cartoon Pink Panther series (1964-69). In the 1970s, Ralph Bakshi attempted full-length animated films, such as Fritz the Cat (1972), aimed at adults, which incorporated contemporary elements such as pornography and violence, and The Lord of the Rings (1978), which used the rotoscoping technique to create new visual effects by graphically processing the live action of the characters.

…UPAのグラフィックな手法は，《八十日間世界一周》や《悲しみよ今日は》等々数多くの映画のタイトル･バックのアニメーションで知られるソール･バスをはじめ，ロバート･ブリア，スタン･バンダービーク，カーメン･ダビーノらの仕事に受け継がれているが，その一方では〈動き〉を省略する技術だけが，高騰する人件費の節約のためにのみ安易にテレビ時代のアニメに引き継がれた。　戦時中に隆盛を極めた暴力と破壊のギャグに満ち満ちた劇場用短編アニメは，狂気の極限ともいうべきテックス･アベリーの作品群(《太りっこ競争》1947など)を頂点とし，次いでフリッツ･フリーレングのパントマイム漫画《ピンク･パンサー》シリーズ(1964‐69)を最後に衰退していく。　70年代に入って，ラルフ･バクシがポルノと暴力というアクチュアルな要素をとり込んだ，おとな向けの《フリッツ･ザ･キャット》(1972)や，登場人物のライブ･アクション(実写)をグラフィックに処理して，新しい映像効果をねらった〈ロートスコーピング技法〉による《指輪物語》(1978)などで試行錯誤を重ねつつも長編アニメに挑戦している。…
