Medical expenses

Japanese: 医療費 - いりょうひ

Expenses incurred for the treatment of injuries or illnesses. These include the cost paid in exchange for medical treatment by a doctor, the cost of medicines obtained from a pharmacy as prescribed by a doctor, the cost of over-the-counter medicines purchased at a pharmacy without a doctor's instructions, and mainly direct costs such as massage, acupuncture, and moxibustion. In addition, indirect costs associated with the treatment of illnesses, such as transportation costs for going to the hospital and hospital escorts, may also be included. In addition to direct medical costs, the World Health Organization (WHO) also includes the costs of normal pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, health checkups, vaccinations, purchase of health medicines, costs of glasses and prosthetics, and medical education and research, and calls these collectively health expenses, but this can also be called medical expenses in a broad sense.

傷病治療のために支出される費用。これには，医師の治療に対する代償として支払われる費用，医師の処方にしたがって薬局で入手する薬剤の費用，医師の指示をうけずに薬局で購入する買薬の費用，あんま，はり(鍼)，きゅう(灸)などの主として直接的な費用が含まれている。このほか，通院のための交通費，入院付添費など，病気治療に付帯する間接的な費用をこれに含めることもある。また世界保健機関(WHO)は，直接治療費のほかに，正常な妊娠･分娩･産褥（さんじよく）の費用や，健康診断，予防接種，保健薬購入，眼鏡･義肢の費用，医学の教育研究の費用などを加え，これらを総称して保健費用とよんでいるが，これを広義の医療費ということもできよう。
