South Dakota
A state in the Midwestern United States. Abbreviated as S.Dak. or SD. Joined the Union in 1889, 40th state. Area 200,000 km2, population 730,000 (1996). State capital Pierre, largest city Sioux Falls. Became a U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Dakota means "friend" in the Sioux language. Other names include "Blizzard State" and "Sunshine State," referring to the steppe climate and the large difference between summer and winter. Furthermore, the nickname "Coyote State" reflects the general American impression that it is a remote western state.
