A state in the Midwestern United States. Abbreviated as S.Dak. or SD. Joined the Union in 1889, 40th state. Area 200,000 km2, population 730,000 (1996). State capital Pierre, largest city Sioux Falls. Became a U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Dakota means "friend" in the Sioux language. Other names include "Blizzard State" and "Sunshine State," referring to the steppe climate and the large difference between summer and winter. Furthermore, the nickname "Coyote State" reflects the general American impression that it is a remote western state.

アメリカ合衆国中西部の州。略称S.Dak.，S.D.。連邦加入1889年，40番目。面積20万km2，人口73万(1996)。州都ピーア，最大都市スー･フォールズ。1803年のルイジアナ購入により合衆国領となる。ダコタはスー族の言語で〈友人〉の意味。別称として〈ブリザード(大吹雪)州〉もしくは〈サンシャイン(日光)州〉と呼ばれるのは，ステップ気候で夏冬の差の大きさを示す。さらに〈コヨーテ州〉という別称は，人跡まれな西部の州というアメリカ人一般の印象を表している。
