〘名〙懐炉に、火をつけて入れる固形燃料。近世中期、懐炉ができた当時は、茄子(なす)の茎、枝、根、犬蓼(いぬたで)の茎を黒焼きにして用いたが、現在では、桐、麻殻、胡麻殻、藁、よもぎなどの粉末に助燃剤を加えて棒状に固め、紙に包んであるのが普通。《季・冬》※たけくらべ（1895‐96）〈樋口一葉〉一〇「店の蚊遣(かやり)香、懐炉灰(クヮイロバイ)に座をゆづり」
